This interactive virtual classroom course will teach participants the essentials of project management in a performance audit context. Participants will:

  • understand the relationship between good project management and a successful audit;
  • apply the basic knowledge and skills across audit phases to translate resources into a high quality, on time and on budget audit; and
  • collect tips, tricks, and tools to better manage future audit projects.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE

This course is intended for performance auditors who do or will perform project management functions.

COURSE FORMAT

The course includes a mix of instructor-led content, interactive exercises and break-out sessions. Students will view the instructors as well as the presentation live on screen.

The course begins with a 1 hour kick-off session followed by 15.5 hours of instruction that are delivered over 4 days.

COURSE OUTLINE

Day One | 4 hours

  • Role and responsibilities of the project manager ​
  • Elements of a successful audit project and project risks​
  • Difference between project management for performance audit and typical project management
  • Fundamentals of audit planning and the time/budget/quality trade-off and impact of scope
  • Audit project planning risks and how to respond to them
  • Managing stakeholders and communication during planning

Day Two | 4.5 hours

  • Difference between audit planning and audit project planning
  • Benefits of good scheduling
  • Key scheduling tools and their advantages and disadvantages 
  • Project scheduling steps
  • Key considerations to developing realistic timelines

Day Three | 4 hours

  • Unforeseen events at the examination phase and strategies for managing them
  • Link between proper risk identification at the planning stage and its impact at examination
  • Project manager’s role and responsibilities for monitoring and controlling the audit project
  • Tips and tools for early identification of issues and strategies for getting back on track
  • Identified disruptive behaviours and how to deal with them

Day Four | 3 hours

  • Ways to build and clear the audit report and implications for developing team members
  • Relevance and contents of separate project reports
  • Importance of formally closing out an audit project
  • How to evolve lessons learned into good practices for future audit projects

ADDITIONAL COURSEWORK

This course will require up to 3 hours of individual work, in addition to instruction time.

ACCREDITATION

Course hours can be submitted for continuing professional development credits, subject to approval by IIA, CPA Canada, or other professional associations.

CANCELLATION POLICY

A cancellation fee of $100 (plus applicable tax) will be applied to cancellations received up to 30 days before the first day of the course. Refunds will not be issued after that date. Substitutions will be permitted up to 10 days before the first day of the course for a fee of $50 (plus applicable tax).
